<p> Exercise has many benefits from improving cardiovascular capacity to reducing weight, and now a new research review published in the July/August issue of Sports Health highlights that weight bearing exercises especially those that include higher levels of strain such as running or jumping, can be effective in enhancing bone health and preventing future diseases and injury such as osteoporosis and fractures. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>&#8220;There are many facets related to maintaining bone health, including genetic, intrinsic, and environmental factors, but physical activity is by far one of the strongest means to develop and maintain healthy bone mass,&#8221; explains study author, Ron Zernicke, PhD, DSc, Director of the Bone &amp; Joint Injury Prevention &amp; Rehabilitation Center at the University of Michigan.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The study reviewed research from 1961 through today by searching Pubmed, Web of Science, and relevant edited books. The study found that three factors&#8211;strain magnitude, strain rate, and strain frequency&#8211;are important to the impact exercise has on bone health. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>&#8220;Because a high number of older women experience osteoporosis, postmenopausal women may receive the most benefits from improving bone mineral density (BMD) through weight bearing exercise. Research clearly illustrates, however, that a critical time to develop BMD is during the pre- and early-pubertal periods. Making sure young children exercise regularly is key to developing healthy bone structures and long-term injury prevention. Regardless of age, weight bearing exercises are extremely beneficial,&#8221; explains Zernicke.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>While most exercises provide an increase in bone density there are a few in particular that are the most beneficial according to the study. For instance, those that put a larger strain on the body (gymnastics, dance and power sports, such as weightlifting), those that have a higher strain rate (e.g., jumping activities), and those that have a higher strain frequency (e.g., running) also appear to increase bone density. The research also noted previous studies in which the benefits of exercise were achieved with less-time-consuming programs (such as 12 minutes, three days a week). Interval training&#8211;short rests in between continuous movement were also found to make a difference to BMD levels. . </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>&#8220;There still isn&#8217;t a &#8216;gold-standard&#8217; for the best blend of these three facets of exercise&#8211;strain magnitude, strain rate, and strain frequency&#8211; but, we do know that exercise is directly linked to bone health and can help prevent bone loss and possible fractures. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In order to increase vertical jumping, you need to improve various physical attributes.  A good jump higher program will emphasize training strength, speed, jumping technique, and conditioning.  Part of you jump training will entail performing various jump higher exercises.  Here are three jumping exercises that will increase vertical jumping.  Don&#8217;t be fooled by their simplicity as these can be very effective.</p>
<p><strong>Power Skipping</strong></p>
<p>You read that right, skipping!  These are similar to the skipping as you did as a kid but these require a little more effort than Little Red Riding Hood skipping to her Grandma&#8217;s house.</p>
<p>During this exercise, you will skip with force and explosion.  This is not a speed exercise but rather a power exercise.  Find a flat surface in which you can skip the length of a basketball court.  You want to skip as high as possible.  As you push off with one foot, you want to bring the other leg as high as you can.  Get that knee up towards your chest.  Go down to the end of the court and come back.  That is one set.</p>
<p><strong>Ankle Jumps</strong></p>
<p>This exercise can be awkward at first but very effective at developing power from your calves.  This drill starts in the squat position and remains so during the exercise.  You need to remain in a squatting position and bounce off your toes.  As you bounce in the air, you want to remain in this squatted position.</p>
<p>This exercise entails repeated jump in the position mentioned above.  You need to push off your toes hard and push yourself back in the air immediately after you hit the ground.  As mentioned before, this can be a little awkward at first but it is a great exercise once you find your rhythm.</p>
<p><strong>Jump Rope</strong></p>
<p>This is the most underrated of the jump higher exercises.  There isn&#8217;t much to add to what you already know about this exercise.  I can say without a doubt that this is a very effective exercise to increase your vertical jump.  You don&#8217;t need much space or fancy equipment.</p>
<p>There many jump techniques you can use to vary the intensity of this workout such as jumping with two feet, one foot, alternating foot, running jump rope, weighted ropes, double turns, and many more.</p>
<p>All three jumping exercises have their place in a jumping routine.  My suggestion would be to work all of these exercises into your routine to increase vertical jumping.  You don&#8217;t have to do them all in the same day but various techniques should be rotated in your routine during the week.</p>
