What are good exercises for jumping???

Add 10

Do you know of any jumping exercises to keep the work more interesting as i would like to have a variety of things to do but dont know of many exercises.

i just read an article that i found from a link on equine.com by Frank Madden about something he came up with he calls box jumps or something like that… you make 2 lines 5 or 6 strides long and then put a jump in the middle and you have tons of line combos you can do using them… you can do roll backs, bending lines and work on lots of jumper turns and angles.
the jump pattern looks a bit like this

___ ………………….. ____

5 or 6 …. ____ …. 5 or 6

___ …………………… ____

(solid lines, ___ are jumps)

  2. jumping on a circle. have four jumps .. 2 place vertically across from each other and 2 placed horizontally across from each other. start with one jump, then add a second, then a third, then the fourth. change up the stridings each time you do it. this exercise helps work your eyes, so that while you are over one jump, you are looking at the next. also, it works on ur horse responding. so one time do a very holding back number of strides, then do a very forward number of strides, then do the medium.

  3. You can put jumps on a serpentine (a figure-8 with an extra loop) and work on the lead changes.
There is an excersize my instructor calls "the circle of death". You start with four poles in a circle, make your horse go around. Make sure to get the corners! This works on balance, plus you can make the jumps bigger when it gets too easy. Go both to the left and to the right, at a trot or canter.
Try an in-and-out jump or other gymnastic. If you feel really bored, make oxers/spreads or add scary elements to the jumps (balloons, tarp, a coat hanging off the standard). That would be interesting.

if you’re looking to gain leg strength do a 2 point around the ring about 5 times… then do some "up, up, down" posting (hold your body up for 2 beats and then sit 1… if you need to you can grab mane… otherwise you may pull on your horse’s mouth)
